The Sleep Center Opens at DeKalb Community Hospital

Jul 07, 2008

DeKalb Community Hospital is proud to open a new Sleep Center to help ensure that the residents of DeKalb and the surrounding counties get the good night’s sleep they deserve. The Sleep Center is located at 527 West Main Street (right across the street from the hospital).

Sleep is essential for physical and mental well-being. Unfortunately, over 100 million Americans of all ages report failing to get a good night’s sleep on a regular basis. There are more than 80 recognized sleep disorders that can affect our quality of life. Poor sleep isn’t simply an inconvenience. Left untreated, a sleep disorder can lead to serious medical conditions including heart attack or stroke, motor vehicle accidents, problems at home or work, and strains on relationships.

If a person is having trouble falling or staying asleep or is feeling tired much of the time, he or she may have a sleep disorder. Some other symptoms include loud, habitual snoring or choking, gasping, or snorting during sleep. Sufferers may experience pauses in breathing during sleep, daytime fatigue, frequent napping, or even crawling, tingling or painful sensations in their legs while sitting or lying still in bed. Still other symptoms may include leg or arm jerks during sleep, morning headaches, depression, memory and concentration problems, as well as irritability and personality changes.

Dr. David Jarvis will oversee the medical testing provided at The Sleep Center. Dr. Jarvis completed his undergraduate studies and received his doctor of medicine from University of Louisville School of Medicine. Following medical school he completed both his residency training and a fellowship at Vanderbilt University. He is Board Certified in Pulmonary Disease, Internal Medicine, and in Sleep Medicine. He is in practice at the Frist Clinic in Nashville.

The Sleep Center at DeKalb Community Hospital is pleased to offer the latest in sleep study technology. The environment is calm and especially suited to put participants at ease. Participants actually spend the night at the center, bringing anything that one might need for an overnight stay at a hotel or friend’s house. Some bring their favorite pillow or blanket, and pajamas, robe and slippers. In order to fully understand one’s sleep, various brain activities and body systems is observed by specially trained staff throughout the night. After the study, Dr. Jarvis reviews and interprets the results and helps one understand specific sleep patterns and problems. Treatment recommendations are made if a sleep disorder is found.

The Sleep Center of DeKalb Community Hospital diagnoses and treats a variety of sleep disorders, including snoring, sleep apnea, insomnia, restless leg syndrome, and narcolepsy. If you or a loved one sleeps too much or too little, has unrestful sleep, or is experiencing any sleep-related symptoms, ask your physician for a prescription to visit The Sleep Center.
