Riverside Center > Reflections / Center for Senior Independence
Growing older is not always easy. In fact, sometimes as older adults we face numerous challenges and difficult changes as part of the aging process. All too often, we face repeated losses in our later years.
- Our loved ones
- Our own health
- Our independence
These loses can understandably prove to be overwhelming at times. Fortunately, it is at these times that we are not alone. Reflections is there to offer specialized support and peace of mind when you and your family need it most.
Some symptoms you may be experiencing may include:
- A persistent, sad, anxious, or “empty” mood
- Feelings of hopelessness, pessimism, guilt, helplessness, and worthlessness
- Loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities
- Sleeping too much or too little
- Changes in appetite
- Decreased energy, fatigue, and feeling “slowed down”
- Thoughts you would be better off dead of suicide
- Increased restlessness or irritability
- Difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions
- Physical symptoms such as headaches, digestive disorders, or chronic pain
Who attends this program?
This program is exclusive to older adults. The seniors who attend are often dealing with difficult losses and unwanted change. Reflections is a program to help those facing depression or anxiety. How often will I visit the program? Everyone starts off visiting the program three days a week and approximately three hours each day. The frequency of visits may decrease as you begin to feel better.
What will I do at Reflections while I am there?
At Reflections you will soon realize that you are not alone. You will be in the company of others your age who are most likely feeling the same way you are. While you are there you will attend small groups that are very much like classes. In these groups you will have a staff person who will talk to you and others about how to handle stress so that you can get the most out of life.
How can this program help me to feel better?
You will benefit from and enjoy the camaraderie of others who attend, from many groups, and from weekly meetings with a doctor specializing in working with senior adults. The staff will check in with you on a one on one basis to make sure that the program is meeting your needs. They are also available to meet with you and your family if you would like them to.
How long will I participate at Reflections?
Each person’s situation and needs are unique. This program is designed to treat you as an individual. You will make the decision, in collaboration with the staff and your doctor, as to when the support of the program is no longer needed.
Will insurance pay for my participation?
The cost of attending Reflections is covered by Medicare and most secondary commercial insurance health plans. You may be responsible for your normal deductible and/or co-pays.
How will I get there?
Some participants choose to drive their own car or have a family member bring them to the program; however most decide to be picked up by the program’s privately owned bus. The bus is also equipped for those requiring wheelchair access. Furthermore, the Reflections driver will be happy to assist you with the walk between the bus and your front door.
