The Sleep Center
Stop Dreaming of a Good Night’s Sleep
If your lack of sleep is becoming a nightmare, you might be one of the 50 million Americans suffering from a sleep disorder. Your poor sleep isn’t just an inconvenience. Left untreated, a sleep disorder can lead to serious medical conditions including heart attack or stroke, motor vehicle accidents, problems at home or work, and strains on relationships. The Sleep Center can help you get the good night’s sleep you’ve been missing.
Restful Nights Lead to Brighter Days
Sleep is essential for physical and mental well-being. There are more than 80 recognized sleep disorders that can affect our quality of life. The Sleep Center of DeKalb Community Hospital diagnoses and treats these sleep disorders, including snoring, sleep apnea, insomnia, restless legs syndrome, and narcolepsy. Sleep isn’t just a “time out” from daily life.
It is an active state and is vitally important for renewing our mental and physical health each day. Sleep is not a simple process. Many parts of the brain control sleep and its different stages. We can solve your sleep problem and give you the good night’s sleep you deserve. When your sleep is restored you will be more able to face and enjoy your life.
What to Look For...
If you have trouble falling or staying asleep or if you feel tired much of the time, you may have a sleep disorder.
Some other symptoms may include:
• pauses in breathing during sleep
• daytime fatigue or frequent napping
• crawling, tingling or painful sensations in your legs while sitting or lying still in bed
• leg or arm jerks during sleep
• morning headaches
• depression
• memory and concentration problems
• irritability and personality changes
Is snoring your body's way of telling you that you need help?
If you snore, you may have obstructive sleep apnea, a breathing disorder. 4% of middleaged males and up to 2% of middle-aged women suffer with sleep apnea. Sleep apnea carries an increased risk of life-threatening conditions, such as high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke and even death.
Pinpointing the Problem
The Sleep Center is able to offer the latest in sleep study technology. The environment is calm and designed to put participants at ease. Participants actually spend the night at the center, bringing anything that one might need for an overnight stay at a hotel or friend’s house. Some bring their favorite pillow or blanket, and pajamas, robe and slippers.
In order to fully understand one’s sleep, various brain activities and body systems are observed by specially trained staff throughout the night. Afterwards, the doctor reviews and interprets the results and helps one understand specific sleep patterns and problems. Treatment recommendations are made if a sleep disorder is found.
